Clan Lyon, also spelled as Lyons, is an ancient Scottish clan with roots in the region of Angus. The Lyon family holds the hereditary title of the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. The most notable figure from Clan Lyon is Patrick Lyon, 1st Lord Glamis, who was granted the title by King James II in the 15th century. The Lyon family’s association with the royal court continued, and in later generations, a Lyon descendant would become the ancestor of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, and the grandmother of the current British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II.
